Biography

Samuel Buck was born in Connecticut in 1793.^[1] As early as 1827, Samuel lived in Salem Township, Ohio.^[2] They lived in Ashtabula County for the rest of their life.^[3][4] From 1850 to 1860, they lived in Conneaut and worked as a joiner/carpenter in other people's households.^[5][6] By 1870, Samuel Buck, architect, lived alone.^[7] Samuel passed away there in 1871.^[1]

Later in life, Samuel entertained guests at their home as both Mr. and Mrs. Buck.^[8][9] According to one news article published after their death, "In public, he donned man's habiliments; but under his own roof he wore feminine attire, declared he was Mrs. Buck, and always spoke of himself and desired to be spoken [of] as a woman."^[10]
