Biography

Elmer was born on February 18, 1897 at Oneida in Scott County, Tennessee. He was the son of Jonathan Phillips and Ellana Sexton. He married Etha R. West on December 25, 1917 in Scott County. Elmer was a prominent and well-known business man in Oneida for many years. He operated a car dealership ( Whippet ), Phillips Skating Rink and Phillips Grocery Store. He passed away on April 25, 1966 at the Oak Ridge Hospital in Oak Ridge, Anderson County, Tennessee.

Obituary,

E. C. (Boog) Phillips, age 69, passed away at Oak Ridge Hospital Monday evening, April 25, 1966, after a lingering illness. He was a well-known merchant having operated the Phillips Grocery Store for many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneida. Survivors: 3 sons, Edward Phillips of Cincinnati, Ohio, Elmo Phillips of Miami, Florida, and Claude Phillips of Bosier City, Louisiana; 6 daughters, Mrs. Lucille Wright, Mrs. Delphia Baldwin and Mrs. Celo Baker all of Oneida, Mrs. Ottie Sexton of Harriman, Mrs. Edna Heth of Oak Ridge, and Mrs. Elmas McGibney of Cincinnati, Ohio; 2 sisters, Mrs. Maude Bowling of Johnson City, Illinois, and Mrs. Sylvania Lorinski of Carlsbad, New Mexico; 1 brother, Clyde Phillips of Oneida; 2 half-brothers, Earl Phillips of Oneida, and Thurman Phillips of Pueblo, Colorado; 1 half sister, Mrs. Dorothy Claborn of Oneida; 26 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the First Baptist Church of Oneida, Thursday, April 28, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lewis Bratcher and Rev. Leland Thomas officiating.
