Taken from William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas (Rossville, Kansas) (Shawnee County) Biographical Sketches: JOSEPH BESEAU, farmer, P.O. Rossville, on Mr. Sickle"s sixty-five acres, came to the state April 16,1875, locating at St. Mary's. Remained there one summer and moved west of town. From there came to Cross Creek and remained two years. Was born in Monroe County, Mich., November 21, 1824, and came from there to Kansas. Was married in 1844, in Monroe County, Mich., to Miss Adaline Navarre. Have eight children-Darrta (Dorothea), Matilda, Mary, Willie, Frank, Frances, Richard and Emma. Is a member of the Catholic Church and a Democrat. JOSEPH BEZEAU DIED AT THE HOME OF HIS SON, BENJAMIN, ST. MARYS, NOVEMBER 10, 1915. HE WAS NINETY ONE YEARS, ELEVEN MONTHS AND TWENTY DAYS OLD AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH. HE WAS BORN NOVEMBER 21, 1824, AT MONROE, MICHIGAN. HE WAS MARRIED TO THEOTISTE MATILDA PAXTON ON FEB 8, 1846, TO WHICH UNION ONE CHILD WAS BORN, HENRY BESEAU. HIS WIFE DIED ONE YEAR AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE. IN 1849 HE MARRIED MISS ADELE NAVARRE OF MONROE, MICHIGAN, AND TO THIS UNION EIGHT CHILDREN WERE BORN: BENJAMIN, RICHARD, WILLIAM, DOROTHY, MARY, FRANCES, EMMA, AND JOSEPHINE. THEY RESIDED AT STONEY CREEK, MONROE, MICHIGAN. APRIL 16, 1875, HE MOVED FROM MONROE, MICHIGAN TO ST. MARYS, WHERE HE RESIDED UNTIL TIME OF HIS DEATH. HE FOLLOWED THE OCCUPATION OF FARMING. HE WAS A RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY FOR OVER FORTY YEARS. HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED OLD GENTLEMAN OF THIS CITY. HE HAD BEEN ABLE TO BE AROUND AND HAD BEEN A VERY LIVELY OLD GENTLEMAN AT TIME OF HIS DEATH CONSIDERING HIS YEARS. HE WAS WIDELY KNOWN IN THIS AREA. FUNERAL TOOK PLACE AT CATHOLIC CHURCH, ST. MARYS. PALL BEARERS: VITAL DeDONDER, PETER RONSSE, JOHN ERBACHER, T. J. RYAN, AUGUST KOLDE, AND J. B. P. DEMARAIS. BURIED AT MT. CALVARY CEMETERY, ST. MARYS, KANSAS.
