Biography
Anna (Houston) James is a part of US Black heritage.
Anna Estelle Houston was born enslaved in about 1844 in Alabama, United States, "probably on a plantation near Montgomery."[1]
According to family lore, Anna arrived in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut, with her mother and brother in about 1850.[1]
She married Willis Samuel James in about 1874.[2]
Anna's daughter Bertha was born on May 26, 1875, in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.[3]
Anna's son Willis was born on December 9, 1877, in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.[4]
In the 1880 census, Anna, age 36, was enumerated in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut. She was the wife of Willis James. She was keeping house.[5]
Anna's son Harold was born on February 3, 1884, in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.[6]
Anna's daughter Louisa was born on January 20, 1886, in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.[7]
Anna died, age 50, on November 19, 1894, in Connecticut, United States.[8][9][10] Anna was buried in Old North Cemetery, Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.[11]
