Benjamin was born 12 December 1914 in Glenwood, Mills, Iowa ^[1] to Seivert Johnson and Minnie May Johnson.

Benjamin, age 20, married Thelma (Meredith) Johnson on 11 July 1934 in Emerson, Iowa.^[2] To this marriage, they had 3 children:
