Sarah Roe Osborn was born on 24 April 1817 in Rival, Maine, United States. She was the daughter of Joseph Osborn (1784–1859) and his wife Mary Moore (1789–1869).
Sarah was born in Maine, in a township called Rival (which no longer exists), to Joseph Osborn and Mary Moore. As a small child she moved with her family to Geauga County, Ohio (her father appears in the 1820 Federal Census). By the early 1830s her family had settled in Door Prairie (now known as Prairie), La Porte County, Indiana, and where she met her future husband, Ivey Burr Stewart. Not long after, she, Ivey, her brother Almon, and her father Joseph, homesteaded near Miklwaukee, Wisconsin. A few years later Sarah and Ivey moved to Koshkenong, Rock County, Wisconsin. At Koshkenong, she would give birth to six daughters and four boys, all of whom would live to adulthood except one daughter (Eva). The entire family, including their adult children would move to Missouri for a very brief time and then onto Paola, Kansas, where she would pass away in 1875 from unknown causes.
