Asher Webster was born on May 4, 1857 in Crawford, Pennsylvania, the first child of Byrum Webster (1802–1891) and Samantha Louise Luther (1833–>1892).[1]
In the 1860 census Asher (sometimes spelled "Esher" or "Asker"), age three, was living with his parents in Fairfield Township, Crawford, Pennsylvania.[2]

In the 1880 census, Ashar now age 23, appears to have replaced his father as head of the house. This is perhaps because he was running the farm--he is listed as a "farmer"--and his father was shoemaking. Both parents are living with him, as are three of his siblings. Clarissa, the last of his siblings, is already eight.[4]

The next year after the census, Asher marries his lifelong companion, Armanda Claretta Smith. Amanda, who is just 17, is seven years younger than Asher.[5]
Asher's father died in 1891 and his mother remarried. These events may have prompted Asher and Amanda to move in the early 1890s. By the time of the 1900 census, Asher and Amanda have moved about 30 miles and taken up residence in Richland Township of Venango, the county just to the southeast of Crawford. Eight of their 11 children have been born.[6]

It is on the 1910 census that we finally see Asher and Amanda have had 11 children in all. Remarkably, 10 of these are girls. Asher is now 52 and Amanda is 45. Their only son, Vance, is 20 years old and still at home, as are the six youngest daughters. The daughter between Vance and the girls, Mary Etta, married in April, before the census.[7]

Sometime before the 1930 census, Asher and Amanda move a few miles away, to Rockland Township in Venango County. All of their family is out of the home, so they are probably downsizing. The property is still called a farm, however, and Asher and Amanda are owners, not renters.[9]
