Biography

John Earl was born in Grenville County, Upper Canada in 1835. He was the son of Elisha Earle and Dorothy Couch.

The death of an old and esteemed resident of Ogdensburg and one of the few remaining '49ers in this part of the country, occurred on Saturday morning, when John Earl passed away in his eighty-second year at the home of his son, Eustace J. Earl, in William street. Mr. Earl had been in failing health for some time due to the infirmities of age.

He was for many years one of the leading residents of the east end and his death removes a familiar figure. He was a life long and stalwart Republican, who always took a keen interest in the affairs of his party. In his earlier years Mr. Earl engaged extensively in sewer construction in Ogdensburg and many of the sewers built after the adoption of the Waring plan were completed under his direction. While overseeing the construction of the Elizabeth street sewer many years ago he nearly lost his life in being caught in a bed of quicksand. He was rescued just as the sand was closing over him.

Mr. Earl, though born in Canada August 13, 1835, resided in this city since boyhood, and was well known by contractors whom he supplied with sand, being owner of the sand pit near the State hospital. For the past few years he had been living in Malone with his sister, but upon her death a few months ago, he returned to this city to live with his son.

He is survived by one brother, Henry Earl, of Tallapoosa, Georgia; two sons, Eustace and Burton, both of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. John Kennedy, of Canton. The sympathy of the community is extended to the survivors in their bereavement.

The funeral will be held from his late home, in William street, this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Mr. MacIntyre officiating. Interment will be made in the Ogdensburg cemetery.[1]
