Biography

BIRTH:
Edvardas Dawes Tirrill, son of Zenas Tirrill and Olive Reed, was born at Cummington, Hampshire, Massachusetts on 19 August 1827.^{[1] [2]}

NAME:
His uncommon given name of "Edvardas" is spelled variously in records pertaining to him. In the published Vital Records of Cummington, Massachusetts, alone, there are three variants: Edvardas at birth; Edvardus at marriage; and Edvardis in the 1858 death records of his sons, Charles W. and George W., etc.

MILITARY SERVICE:
Edvardis D. Tirrell appears on a Muster Roll of a detachment of officers and enlisted personnel "of the United States Marines, stationed at Brooklyn, New York, under the command of Lieut. Col. Sam^l Miller from the 1^st to the 31^st May 1847, inclusive." The Muster Roll reports further that he enlisted on 31 May 1847, his rank was "Private," and that he was then transferred on the same date to Fort Hamilton, Long Island.

Edvardis appears next on a Muster Roll which states that he "was transferred to General Hospital at Vera Cruz 16^th July 1847." Apparently, he recovered from that sickness or injury; the 1863 enumeration described below states that Edvardis gave 18 months service in the Mexican War (i.e. service through November 30, 1848).

Early in the Civil War, a "CONSOLIDATED LIST of all persons of Class II, subject to do military duty in the Ninth Congressional District, consisting of the Counties of Franklin, Hampshire, and Worcester, State of Massachusetts" was compiled during the month of June 1863. Edvardis D. Tirrell, age 36, of Plainfield, appears in the list and his "Prior Military Service," is described as "18 months in Mexican War, Left hand amputated." This implies that the amputation was the result of an injury received during the Mexican War; whether or not the amputation was related to his earlier hospitalization or some later injury, he was surely exempt from further military service during the Civil War.

MARRIAGE:
Edvardus D. Tirrill, age 25, son of Zenas and Olive, deceased, married Sarah A. Gurney, age 23, daughter of Rush and Aurelia, at Cummington, Hampshire, Massachusetts on 31 August 1851; both Edvardus and Sarah are reported as being residents of Cummington.^[3][4] At the time of their marriage Edvardus is called a "worker in India rubber."

DEATH:
No record of the date and place of Edvardis' death (or burial) have been found. However, Edvardis was certainly living in January 1864 (his youngest child, Frank Austin Tirrell, was born at Plainfield on 25 September 1864); as Frank's birth record gives no indication that his father was deceased, it is reasonable to assume that Edvardis was living on 25 September 1864. Edvardis does not appear in the 1870 Census, however, where his wife, Sarah, appears as head of household ; this suggests that Edvardis died prior to the census date, June 1870. He certainly died before the 1880 census (where Sarah is called a widow).
