Earl Gargus was a Missourian.

Earl was born on May 17, 1896, to Mathias and Annie Gargus. [1] [2][3] [4] [5] [6][7] [8][9] [10][11] His birthplace is given on his World War I draft registration card as Chamois, Missouri[10]; however, his World War II draft registration card names it as Morrelton, which is a defunct location in Central Township, Franklin County, Missouri.[11] This location is also given as his birthplace on some of his military records, like ship passenger lists. [12] To make matters more confusing, his twin brother Pearl gave his own birthplace as Callaway County, Missouri, on several occasions, so it's difficult to say definitively which is correct. His name was intended to be "Early" or "Earlie," with no middle name, according to Chester Gargus, but was formatted as "Earl E." for the military, which required a middle initial. I'm not aware of any birth certificate or official documentation that uses this spelling.*

Earl was enumerated for the federal census on June 20, 1900. He was 4 years old at this time, and was living with parents Mathias and Annie, half-brother Martin, and siblings Clarence, John, Matthew, and Pearl, in Linn, Missouri. [1]

Earl was enumerated for the federal census on April 16, 1910. He was 13 years old at this time, and was living with mother Annie, siblings Clarence, John, Matthew, and Ulysses, and half-brother Logan, on Colorado Avenue in Bland, Missouri. He was attending school at this time, and was noted to be able to read and write. [2]

Earl registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, when he was 21 years old. At this time, he reported that he worked for M.L. Hardy and lived in Sullivan, Missouri. He was described as tall and slender, with blue eyes and light brown hair. [10]

Earl enlisted in the United States Army on May 26, 1918, when he was 22 years old. [13]

Earl sailed from Brooklyn, New York, on board the Ulysses with Company F, 352nd Infantry, 88th Division of the Army, on August 16, 1918. [12]

Earl was discharged from the Army on June 13, 1919, having attained the rank of Private. He was 23 years old. [13][9]

Earl was enumerated for the federal census on January 12, 1920. He was 23 years old at this time, and was living with mother Annie, half-brother Logan, and brother Pearl with his wife Annie, on Olive Street in Sullivan, Missouri. He was employed making railroad ties, and was noted to be able to read and write. [3]

Sometime after 1922, Earl was married to Edna King.*

Earl was enumerated for the federal census on April 12, 1930. He was 33 years old at this time, and was living with wife Edna and children Beulah, Pearl, and Chester, in Johnson Township, Washington County, Missouri. He worked as a laborer on a sawmill. [4]

In 1935, Earl was inferred to be living in Johnson Township, Washington County, Missouri. [5]

Earl was enumerated for the federal census in April 1940. He was 43 years old at this time, and was living with wife Edna and children Beulah, Pearl, Chester, Howard, Evelyn, Robert, and Kathryn, in Johnson Township, Washington County, Missouri. He was employed as a laborer. [5]

Earl registered for the draft on April 25, 1942, when he was 45 years old. At this time, he reported that he worked on a sawmill in Washington County, Missouri (Sullivan post office). He was described as approximately 6 feet tall and 165 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion. The card erroneously states his birthdate as 1895 instead of 1896. [11]

Earl was enumerated for the federal census on April 13, 1950. He was 53 years old at this time, and was living with wife Edna and children Chester, Howard, Evelyn, Robert, and Kathryn, in Johnson Township, Washington County, Missouri, with his location described as "in the hills between Brazil, Cicero, and Indian Creeks." He was a sawmill worker. [6]

Earl died on November 8, 1975, in Sullivan, Missouri. He was buried in Sullivan IOOF Cemetery. [14] [7][13] [8] [15]
