Biography

Anna Elisabeth Bittenbender was the daughter of Johannes "John" Bittenbender, an early settler of an area of Pennsylvania that would become Hamilton Township in Monroe County. Hamilton, near Stroudsburg, is the second-oldest township in Monroe and was established 24 Dec 1762.

According to her headstone, Elisabeth was born 17 Apr 1755.[1] Given that she was born after her father's arrival in 1748 and that her father's holdings in what would become Hamilton but was then an unimproved area of Bucks County dates to the early 1750s, she was probably born in Bucks County.

She was a frontierswoman, she loved to garden and she who bore at least 12 children, 10 of whom grew to maturity.

Her father's land abutted that of another Palatinate immigrant, Michael Kintz. She married Michael's son Anthony about 1774 based on her age and the birth of her oldest known child in 1775. She would have been about 19

She would have been the inferred wife Anthony Kense in Hamilton for the first U.S. census in 1790. She would have been one of five females, presumably her and four surviving daughters (Christiana, Sarah, Margaret and Anna).[2] Also in the house was Anthony and two males under 16 (Christopher and Melchior).

Beginning in 1799, birth and baptism records for several of the children of Anthony and Anna Elisabeth Kins or Kintz showed up in the records of Christ Lutheran Church in Hamilton:

  • Anna Elizabeth born 5 Jul 1779 and baptized 29 Aug 1779;[3]
  • Sara, born 30 Aug 1781, baptized 19 May 1782;[4]
  • Margaretha born 15 Mar 1783 and baptized 20 Apr 1873;[5]
  • Johan Melchor, born 17 May 1785, baptized 19 Jun 1785;[6]
  • Scharlotha, born 2 Dec 1787, baptized 23 Mar 1788;[7] and
  • Susana, born 24 Dec 1791, baptized 3 Jun 1792.[8]

She would have been part of the Anthony Keentz Esquire household in the 1800 U.S. Census for Hamilton.[9] Anthony was listed as over 45, as was she (she would have just turned 45). Of her inferred children at home, there was one male under 10 (Anthony Jr., 3), one male 10-15 (Melchior, 15), one male 16-25 (Christopher, 23), two females under 10 (Mary and Susanna), one female 10-15 (Anna), and two females 16-25. One of the females would have been Margaret, 17, who had not yet married. The other was likely Sarah, 18, but could have been Christopher's wife since we do not have marriage dates for either of them.

The first two census records match up with what we know of Elisabeth's children if we assume John was born after 1800, even though his year of birth is often reported as 1799.

In 1810, however, there were four mysterious children 10-15 years in his Hamilton household, two boys and two girls. Also, Elisabeth would have been 55 and the only adult female was listed as 26-44. Either this is an enumeration error or Elizabeth was elsewhere. If so , the 26-44 woman could have been an older daughter and/or the mother of the other children.

The household contained a the 26-44 woman, Anthony , over 45, one male under 10 (John), three males 10-15 (Anthony Jr., 13, and two unknown), one male 16-25 (possibly Melchoir, 25, but perhaps the husband of the 26-44-year-old woman and the father of the unexplained children), and three females 10-15 (Mary, 16, and two unknown).[10]

In 1820 there were only three people in the Hamilton home of Anthony Kintz Senior, her and Anthony, both over 45 (Elisabeth would have been 65), and one women 16-25 (unknown but possibly Mary, 26, or one of the women 10-15 in 1810).[11]

In his will dated and probated 5 Dec 1822, Anthony provided a dower for his wife "Eliza," as well and the bed and any other furniture she wanted and instructed that if she chose to live alone after he death, the estate would buy a piece of land and build her a house "and make it comfortable for her and fined or maker her a garden which she shall occupy and [illegible] during her life. [12][13]

According to the headstone of Anna Elisabeth Kintz in the graveyard of Christ Hamilton Lutheran Church in Hamilton Square, she died 2 Sep 1826, "Ald 71 Jahr, 4 monat u.16 Tag."

Research Notes

  • The listing of Anthony's wife as over 45 in 1800 and 26-44 in 1810 is probably an enumeration error but consideration should be given to whether Anthony might have had two wives. His children were born over a period of 24 years so it is reasonable to assume he only had one wife.
  • John's date of birth is often listed as 1 May 1799 but the census records only work if John was born after the enumeration of the 1800 census. [14]
  • Anna Elizabeth and Charlotte Kintz are believed to have died young because there are no records of them after their baptisms, because they do not in their father's will and because there would have been more woman in the house in 1900 is they had lived.
  • Elisabeth's Find A Grave site erroneously list John's brother Conrad as her father. Orphan Court records after Conrad's death in 1757 and wife Maria's death in 1758 mention only the four sons, George, Chris, Jacob and Conrad.[15] John's will mentions his grandson John Kintz.
