Samuel enlisted for the War of 1812 when he was eighteen, serving as a Private in Capt. Andrew A. Vanderzee's Company of the New York Militia from September 7, 1814 until his discharge on December 8, 1814.
After this, he became a Baptist minister. At some point between the birth of George in 1844 and the birth of Samuel in 1848, the family moved from New York to Pennsylvania.
