I have two Olmsted genealogies, one prepared by my grandfather Charlies Cornish Olmsted and one a cousin had prepared by a professional genealogist for his mother about 15 years ago, and neither are in an electronic form. How do I accurately attribute these as I enter the data manually? If there are differences, especially is the data that dates back to the early 1600s, should I favor the later, professionally prepared genealogy over that one my grandfather researched in the 1960s and 70s?

It took me a good year to learn how things work here. I have done genealogy for over twenty years . This system works for me ( I also have my own website) .
Sandy, WikiTree has both veteran researchers and new researchers. You will see a wide variety of profiles here . Many, like our Puritan Great Migration projects, are sourced properly and many are old ones before WikiTree installed Matchbot to prevent duplicates. We have " arborists " , another project , that merge the old profiles, put sources on them. It's a volunteer driven community so many of us are on here because we love wiki and genealogy.
As for privacy, basically it is up to you and your comfort level. The profiles that are over 200 years old are basically open, or in the process of being opened for collaboration . If you find some 200 years old profiles that are blocked or not "open " , please let know. Is that what you mean by blocked ? You can only edit open profiles.
Thank you for the welcome. I hope you can answer some questions for me.
As I dig around on the site, it seems that a lot of the listing block certain info, and I am wondering if I should go back and edit some of the info I have put in to block some of the info from the public parts of the site, and if so, what info is recommended to be private. Second, it seems that a lot of the posts are a year of more old; is that common? Is this site one of many online tools used by researchers?

I am looking to research my mother's family, the Mannings, and I will be glad to enter all the the Olmsted research I have, which is extensive and goes back hundreds of years. We have limited info on the Mannings going back to the late 1800s which we will also share. I am a writer, college professor, PhD candidate in film studies, and community arts organizer. I would dearly love to help my mother find more information on her father's family. It is interesting because of the stories/information passed down connect her father and his six brothers to Missouri, a Wyoming ranch, and San Fransisco. My mother's father's father was also one of seven brother.
