Biography

Henry Settle KCB DSO was born in Lewes, Sussex, England.

Sir Henry Hamilton Settle was born on 27 Jan 1847 in Lewes, Suffolk, England, the second son of Capt. H T Settle and Eliza Clarke.

In 1851 he was age 4 and living with his parents and siblings in the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich, Kent, England. His father was a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery.^[1]

He married Edith Sarah Rigg on 5 Jan 1875 in Paddington, London, England. The marriage was registered in Kensington, London, England.^[2][3][4]

Children: Sybil Rosalind, Lillian Mary.

In 1881 he was age 34 and living with his wife Edith and daughter Sybil, and four servants in Stoke Damerel, Devon, England. He was a Captain in the Royal Engineers.^[5]

In 1911 he was age 64 and living with his wife and five servants in Kensington, London, England. He was a Lt. Gen. in the Royal Engineers.^[6]

He died aged 74 on 22 Apr 1923 in Bath, Somerset, England, and was buried on 23 Apr 1923 in the Bath Abbey Cemetery in Widcombe, Somerset, England.^[7][8] His will was probated on 12 Jun 1923 in Bath, Somerset, England.^[9]

Military Career

He went to Cheltenham College and served in the Royal Engineers in 1867. He was in the Nile Expedition of 1884-5 in Sudan. He was then Surveyor General and Quarter Master General of the Egyptian Army 1886-1892. He was then promoted to Lt. Gen. and awarded the Distinguished Service Order. In 1992 he was Inspector General of Egyptian Police. In 1985 he returned to England as Asst. Inspector General of Fortifications. In 1898 he was created a Companion of the Order of the Bath. In 1899 he commanded the Royal Engineers at Malta and then served in the Second Boer War as Inspector General of Lines of Communication at Cape Town. In 1900 he was in Orange River Colony and then Cape Colony, and then the Orange Free State. In Dec 1901 after a trip back to England he joined the administrative command of Cape Colony. He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath on 29 Nov 1900 by King Edward VII. He was promoted to Major General. After the war in South Africa he was in command of the troops in Cape Colony and returned to England to command the Portsmouth Coast Defences in 1908.^[10]
