Biography

Hannah Long, daughter of Robert Long^[1] and Elizabeth, was born 2 March 1637 (2 (1) 1637) in Charlestown, Massachusetts^[2][3] and was baptized there on March 12.^[4]

Her father, Robert Long, married twice and had children with both wives. His first wife, Sarah (Taylor) Long, died in England and Robert remarried to Hannah's mother, Elizabeth, by 1634. Her mother Elizabeth's origins and last name at birth are unknown. Robert and Elizabeth emigrated to New England in 1635 aboard the Defense along with ten children and a servant. Hannah was the first of three children of Robert and Elizabeth born in Massachusetts.^[4]

Hannah and Henry Cookery were married^[1][5] on 22 October 1657 in Charlestown^[4][6] by Capt. Gookin.^[7] They likely had a son:

• Henry, born 13 January 166[0-2].^[1] Henry Cookery, grandson of Elizabeth Long, was an apprentice in 1673^[8][9]

Hannah and Luke Perkins were married on 9 March 1663^[1] in Charlestown, Massachusetts^[4][10] by Richard Russell, magistrate.^[11] They had the following children:

• John, born 10 May 1664, died 16 April 1667^[1]
• Luke, born 14 March 1665, died young^[1]
• Luke, born 18 March 1667, died 27 December 1748, married Martha Conant and had issue; he was a blacksmith and his family removed to Ipswich and Plympton and other towns in Massachusetts^[1]
• Elisabeth, married Nicholas Lobdell and had children.^[1] She was born 14 March 1669^[12]
• John, born 15 April 1670^[1]
• Abraham, baptized 28 July 1672^[1]
• Hannah, born 9 December 1673, married Richard Way and had children^[1]
• Mary, born 5 April 1676^[1]

Hannah's father left a will dated 10 June (or July) 1658 that was proved 16 February 1663/4,^[4] so Hannah was married to Henry Cookery when the will was written but was remarried to Luke Perkins when the will went through probate. In his will, Robert left to "my daughter Hannah twenty pounds". In an undated codicil, Robert instructed that "if Joshua my son have no need of what I give him, then my will is that his part be divided to Hannah and Ruth and Deborah".^[4]

Hannah was admitted to the First Church [of Charlestown] on 29 March 1668,^[1] along with her husband.^[8]

On 9 May 1673, several of the heirs of Robert Long, including "Luke Perkins and Hannah my wife", sold all their rights, titles and interests in Robert Long's estate to "our beloved brother John Long".^[4]

Hannah's husband, Luke Perkins, died 20 March 1709/10 and their son Luke Perkins of Ipswich was appointed administrator of the estate on 12 March 1712/13. Hannah was named in the probate administration documents along with their son Luke, and granddaughters Elizabeth Wright and Sarah Emery.^[1][13]

Hannah died 16 November 1715. That year, her son Luke sold the family homestead in Charlestown in his capacity as administrator of the estates of both of his parents.^[1]

Research Notes

Son Henry

No evidence has been found that Henry is the son of Luke Perkins. He is more likely the son of Henry Cookery, as Pope says that Hannah's mother, Elizabeth Long, had a grandson, Henry Cookery, who was an apprentice in 1673.^[8]

Charlestown

Charlestown was settled and incorporated in 1628, two years before Boston. It later (1874) became a part of the city of Boston and is now a historic neighborhood in the city. Charlestown belonged to Middlesex County from 1643 to 1874, when it became a part of Suffolk County. Middlesex County was one of the four original counties established in Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1643.^[14]
