Alexander was born in 1777 to Malcolm MacRae and Isabel Bain. He had at least 3 siblings: Hugh, Nancy, and John.

He emigrated from Scotland to North Carolina at the age of 3 (about 1774) with his family.

He married in 1814 to Effy McRae (parents unknown-possibly Christopher McRae & Nancy Ann Campbell or John McRae & Margaret Campbell?). He was about 36 years old. They had about 13 children together:

  2. Nancy Bain McRae
  3. Malcom Nicholson McRae
  4. William A McRae
  5. Daniel Fraser McRae
  6. James Duncan McRae

  8. Isabella Mary McRae
  9. Sarah C McRae
  10. Elizabeth J McRae
  11. John Colin McRae
  12. Farquhard W McRae
  13. Susannah Green McRae

He received a grant of four land lots and settled in Telfair County about 1815, where part of the town of McRae now stands.

Alexander is noted to be one of the oldest settlers in Telfair County and founded the town of McRae. He was one of the first builders of the steamships on the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers.

Note in the first paragraph of the biography there is a note that he has siblings of Hugh, Nancy and John. The profile linked in the Bio for Nancy is attached to 2 different parents, which would not make her a sibling of Alexander.
