Biography

Joshua Newton Freeman was born October 6, 1816 in Port Mouton, Nova Scotia to Robert Freeman and Gertrude (Heckman) Freeman. He was a descendant of Edward Freeman, who arrived in the colony of Massachusetts from Devonshire in 1635 and of Col. William Freeman who took land in Nova Scotia Colony about 1763.

He was educated at the grammar school in nearby Liverpool and became a merchant by trade. He was largely associated with the nearby community of Liverpool.

He married first, Sarah Elizabeth daughter of John Campbell, Esq, for many years M.P.P. for Queens County, Nova Scotia. They were married on June 17, 1846 and had at least one child. Sarah passed away in 1848.

At some point between 1848 and 1852, Joshua travelled to Australia likely during the Victorian Gold Rush which began in 1851.

It was in Melbourne that he married Elizabeth Moody, formerly of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, on January 22, 1852.[1] She passed away in 1854.

By 1856, he had returned to Nova Scotia.

Third, he married Mary, widow of the Rev. John Mills of N.B on June 14, 1856 at Wolfville. She was a daughter of Joseph Barss of Horton.[2]

From 1864 to 1882, he was High Sheriff of Queens County.

He ran unsuccessfully to become the federal Member of Parliament for Queens County in 1882, followed by a successful run in 1887.[3] He served as M.P. from 1887-1891 under Prime Minister Sir. John A. MacDonald. He ran unsuccessully for a second term in 1891. Joshua passed way on November 21, 1912 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and was interred at the Methodist Cemetery in Liverpool.[4][5]
