He was born on Nov. 1, 1902 in Fredericksburg, Va., to Charles Emmett and Caroline Thornton Dommitt Satterwhite. He married Margaret Hungiville on Feb. 2, 1940 and they remained married until her death on Jan. 25, 1986. In 1926, he received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He came to Bradford in the 1930s. Later, in 1965, he received an honorary degree of doctor of commercial science from St. Bonaventure University. Prior to becoming involved in the aviation industry, he was a licensed pilot. He ultimately purchased Allegheny Airlines and developed it into US Air. In 1952, he was elected as director of Allegheny Airlines. He was later named chairman of the board in 1956, and ultimately became chairman emeritus of US Air in 1978. USAir later became US Airways which merged with American Airlines in 2015 to become the largest airline in the world. So, the next time you choose to fly on American Airlines, think about its Bradford connection. Satterwhite was a member of the National Aviation Club and the Airline Owners and Pilots Association. He was also a member of the Bradford Airport Commission, which is now the Bradford Regional Airport Authority. Satterwhite was also involved in politics. He was the chairman of the McKean County Democratic Committee (1935-1940), and a member of the Democratic Senate Committee (1944- 1959). In 1972, he headed the state organization of the Democrats for Nixon. In the late 1970s, Pennsylvania Governor Milton J. Shapp asked him to head his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Satterwhite used his association with Pennsylvania governors to garner support for many projects in Bradford including the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, where he served on the Advisory Board.

He was active in buying, developing and selling businesses and properties throughout Bradford and the U.S. He was a member of the Bradford City Planning Commission, the board of directors of the Route 219 Association and the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce. Satterwhite also was the president of the Bradford Industrial Corp. from 1951 to 1962 and played a major role in encouraging the location of Corning Glass Works in South Bradford and opening of the Speer Carbon Co. (KOA Speer Co.) facility on Bolivar Drive. Satterwhite also assisted in the expansion of the Dresser Manufacturing plant facilities. Satterwhite continued to be involved in Fairway Ford Lincoln Mercury (Olean, N.Y.), oil and gas production, insurance, Top Line and Allegheny Bradford Corps. Like Lester Edwards, he also received the Golden Deeds Award in 1975 for his involvement in community organizations. He died on Oct. 23, 1988, but the Satterwhite family continues his tradition of work and community involvement. His daughter, Mary Ann and son, John H. Satterwhite followed in their father’s footsteps. Both are very active in the community. John H. Satterwhite continues as the publisher of the Bradford Era and president and CEO of Bradford Publishing Company which also owns and operates the Olean Times Herald and Salamanca Press. The Satterwhite family also maintains an interest in WESB and WBRR. He and his wife Jeanie Satterwhite also continue to be active on boards and in non-profit organizations throughout our area. Henry Satterwhite’s legacy continues on through his children and grandchildren.
