Anyone who has traced their Walker line back to these two people, supposedly from Wigtown (Scotland), may have trouble getting any further back because the only official records (not LDS / Ancestry file ones) that seem to exist for a Jane Mcknight are:
Are the Walkers from Wigtown (Scotland) or actually Northern Ireland? The Commissariot Record of Wigton: Testaments, 1700-1800, Volume 23; By Wigtown, Scot. (Commissariot) does not show any Walkers listed.
The first data reference of John Walker II is the statement by White, 1902:3 that he married Katherine Rutherford In Wigton, Scotland, in March of 1702. (This is the Son of McKnight). Sometime after their marriage John and Katherine moved to Newry, Ireland (children born); According to White, John Walker left Strangford Bay (a small village at the mouth of Strangford Lough in County Down, Northern Ireland) in May, 1726. . . .on board a vessel commanded by Richard Walker, and landed in Maryland August 2. . . . settled in Chester Co., PA, where he died in September 1734. His wife died in 1738. Both are buried at Nottingham Meeting House in Chester Co, PA.
The family came to America in 1726 (VA 1734) settling in (now Cecil County Maryland / Chester County Pennsylvania ( At different locations White indicates different arrival dates; boundary dispute PA and MD). White based her early family history on a document referred to as the "Joel Walker Record". [2]Virginia Valley Records updates the summary (p.225-6) and shows 11 descendents of John..
The first settlers on the Wappatomaka VA (South Branch) were Coburn, Howard, Walker and Rutledge. This settlement commenced about the year 1734 or 1735[3]
The lineage of Mary's father, Alexander of Augusta VA, is uncertain. He is probably descended from the family of John Walker of Wigton, Scotland. John of Wigton is probably the progenitor of most of the Walker families who lived in Western Virginia. This family and the descendants are described in White's book[4]
John Walker married Jane McKnight lived in Wigtown (in southwestern Scotland in the late 1600s) where he married Jane McKnight. They had at least two children:
Emigrated to America with their Uncle John and Aunt Katherine. It is thought that Mary's father came to Augusta VA (with family); that he is probably the Nephew of John and Katherine Rutherford; and the Alexander who married Elizabeth (Patterson) and died in Augusta Co. (1778 Will Probate).
