Biography

Ignace was born on 30 May 1797 and was baptized the next day in Saint-Joachim parish in Châteauguay. The parish register identifies him as "Ignace Gabriel né d'heir du légitime mariage d'Ignace Gabriel Cheverfills Cantinier du lieu & de Marguerite Caillier; le parrain Ignace Dorai; & la marine Marguerite Chevrefils qui seule a signé avec nous."[1]

At age 20 Ignace married Josette Couillard on 2 February 1818 in Châteauguay. The Saint-Joachim parish register states that the marriage was between "Ignace Gabriel Chevrefils cultivateur fils mineur de feu Igance Gabriel Chevrefils et de défunte Marguerite Cayer de cette paroisse et Josette Couillard fille majeure de Pascal Couillard cultivateur et de Marie Anne Doray aussi de cette paroisse . . . . en presence de Pierre Joseph Chevrefills oncle de l'époux et Luc Chevrefils son frere et de Paschal Couillard frere de l'épouse."[2]

The couple had seven children: six daughters, one of whom died at the age of 4, and one son.

According to his biography, he was courtmartialed and sentenced to death for an attack on the "maison seigneurial" in Beauharnois.[3] The attack, known as the Battle of Camp Baker, was part of a rebellion against British taxation. The New South Wales, Australia Convict Indents, notes that his trial for treason began on 11 January 1839. Convicted on 30 January, he was shipped to New South Wales, arriving there 25 February 1840 on the Buffalo.[4]

The Nosorigines biography states that after five days of illness brought on by accidental poisoning, Gabriel died on 2 September 1841 in a Sydney, Australia hospital.
