Biography

Francesca Governali is born around 1756 in Corleone, the daughter of Maestro Rosario Governali and Anna Terranova.

Francesca marries Don Salvatore Canali on 22 February 1783. Her parents are living.[1] At this time, Francesca is not yet styled donna, though she is in the records of her youngest son's baptism, and her children's marriages.

Francesca and Salvatore have at least eight children together: two sons named Gioachino (1783 and 1791), Anna (1785), two daughters named Elisabetta (1789 and 1798), Carmela (c. 1791), Lucia (1793), and Salvatore (1796).

The first son named Gioachino is born and baptized 8 December 1783. His godparents are Don Domenico Cala' and Donna Giovanna Piscatore, a married couple.[2] He is presumed to have died before his brother is born in 1791.

Anna is born and baptized 8 June 1785, named after her maternal grandmother. Her godparents are Don Giuseppe Favaloro, who is unmarried, and Donna Maria Antonia Gennaro, wife of Don Gaetano.[3]

Open issue: There is a death record for an Anna Canali, infant daughter of Gaetano and Cosma Canali, on 3 November 1785.[4] There is no other record of Gaetano and Cosma having a daughter by this name. Therefore, it is likely that this death record is for the infant daughter of Don Salvatore and Francesca Canali, born in June. She would be five months old.

The first daughter named Elisabetta is born and baptized 18 March 1789. Her godparents are Don Giliberto Bentivegna, who is unmarried, and Donna Luigia Labruzzo, widow of Don Vincenzo.[5]

Elisabetta dies 2 August 1790.[6] She is a year and four months old.

The second son named Gioachino is born and baptized 1 September 1791. His godparents are Don Liborio and Donna Rosa Termini, unmarried brother and sister.[7]

Carmela's birth year is not known. I have estimated she is 20 (b. 1791) when she marries.

Gioachino dies 9 September 1793[8] at two years of age.

Lucia is born and baptized 26 October 1793. Her godparents are Maestro Agostino and Benedetta Zangala, a married couple.[9]

Salvatore, the younger, is born and baptized 7 June 1796. His godfather is Gennaro Tutino, from the Kingdom of Naples, represented by Gaetano Palumbo on 22 May 1796 by authority of the notary Don Filippo lo Piccolo.[10]

The second daughter named Elisabetta is born and baptized 27 December 1798. Her godparents are the Notary Don Filippo lo Piccolo and Vincenza Governali, who are both unmarried.[11]

Death of Francesca

Donna Francesca dies at age 45 (b. 1756) on 11 October 1801.[12]

Donna Elisabetta marries twice, first to Don Carmelo Guarneri on 28 February 1813. Francesca and Salvatore have died by this time.[13]

Carmela marries Maestro Cristoforo Terranova on 6 September 1814.[14]

Maestro Salvatore marries Maria Glaviano on 16 April 1826.[15]

Maria Carmela dies at age 46 (b. 1791) on 14 July 1837, at the height of the first recorded cholera outbreak in western Europe. Her husband survives her.[16]

Elisabetta remarries, to Calogero Marullo, on 26 December 1837.[17]

Elisabetta dies at age 86 (b. 1794) on 10 April 1880. She is the widow of Carmelo Guarneri and of Calogero Marullo.[18]

Salvatore dies at age 85 (b. 1796) on 4 August 1881. He is the widower of Maria Glaviano.[19]
