I have been living in Porthcawl for a couple of years and have 'adopted' Thomas's grave: I have previously lived in NZ for over 20 years. A commemoration event was held for Thomas, and other Commonwealth servicemen, on July 2, 2017 when a memorial stone was unveiled at nearby Stormy Down which was a training camp during WWII. Lisa d'Oliveira, a Wing Commander of the NZ Defence Forces, laid a wreath on Thomas's grave as did I and representatives of Air NZ. Rob Taylor, who organised the event, has investigated the events surrounding Thomas's demise: he died, together with his gunner, when a training mission went wrong. His plane turned too quickly, cutting off the fuel supply to the plane's engine, and crashed into the sea off Porthcawl.
