Biography

Lucretia Higley, the eighth child of Lieutenant Daniel and Ruth Higley, was born at Marlboro, Vt., November 13, 1781.She married June 20, 1801, Oliver Higley, her second cousin, the son of Elijah Higley, who emigrated from Connecticut the same that her father went to Marlboro, Vt. and may have accompanied him.After living in their native town for a few years.O liver and Lucretia Higley removed to the State of New York, making changes from Port Kent t o Edinburg, and from there to Jamestown, Chautauqua County, where they settled some time between the years 1820 and 1830.It was here that Lucretia Higley, with her husband, joined the 'Church of the Latter-Day Saints,' about 1830, and from this time to the close of her eventful life, she was a zealous Mormon.She resided in her old age, after the death of her husba nd, with her son, Clark Higley, at Tooele, Tooele County, Utah, where she died July 25, 1865 , in her eighty-fourth year. Her husband died May 6, 1846, in Iowa, where they then lived.

Oliver and Lucretia Higley joined the church in Chautauqua County, New York and moved to Kirtland, Ohio in 1836 with 3,000 Saints and when the Saints exodus of 1837 they moved to Buffalo Grove, Ogle County, Ill., where they resided until 1843 when they went to Jo Davis County, Ill. until the close of his life May 6, 1846. He worked in agriculture until elderly when he managed a basket factory. He was respected for being honest and kind and enjoyed good will of all religious sects. Lucretia moved with her son Clark west to Toole, Utah where she died at 84.

Buried about July 1865. Tooele City Cemetery, Tooele, Utah Territory, United States.
