Biography

Calogero Castro is born 12 July 1775 in Corleone and baptized the next day. He is the son of Giovanni Castro and Francesca Termine. His godparents are Francesco and Rosalia Termine, wife of Giuseppe.[1]

Calogero and his wife, Giuseppa Monteleone, have at least ten children together: Francesco (1804), Francesca (c. 1805), Gaetana (1807), Giovanni (1809), Giuseppe (1811), Anna Felicia (1813), Gaetano (1817), Francesco Paolo (1820), Carmela (1823), and Maria Carmela (c. 1824).

Francesco is born and baptized on 23 September 1804. His godparents are Gaetano Addamo and Bernarda, wife of Nicolo' Addamo.

Francesca is born around 1805, based on her reported age at death.

Gaetana is born and baptized on 20 February 1807. Her godparents are Gaetano Ponte and Gaetana Guagliardo, who are not married.

Giovanni, named after his paternal grandfather, is born and baptized on 3 March 1809. His godparents are Francesco Rizzotto and Carmela Monteleone, the unmarried daughter of Gaetano.

Gaetana dies on 21 September 1809 at two and a half years of age.

In 1811, Calogero, 45 (b. 1766), his wife Giuseppa, 32 (b. 1779), and children Francesca, 5 (b. 1806), and Giovanni, 3 (b. 1808), live on the Strada del Canc. Catinella, in the Porto Salvo district. Living with them are Giuseppa's father Gaetano Monteleone, 51 (b. 1760), Carlo Lampo, 30 (b. 1781), his wife Maria Carmela, 18 (b. 1793), and their children Rosalia, 12 (b. 1799), and Antonino, 6 (b. 1805). Carlo's relation to Calogero's family is not yet known.

Giuseppe is born 24 October 1811 and baptized the next day. His godparents are Bernardo and Maria di Giglia, a married couple.

In the 1812 stato delle anime, Calogero and his family live in the strada di Colletto, not far from their former home. He is reportedly two years older (b. 1765), while his wife, Giuseppa, has grown younger: now age 29 (b. 1783). Living with them are their children Francesca (b. 1803) and Giovanni (b. 1807), who have aged three years and two, respectively, and youngest son Giuseppe, reportedly two years old (b. 24 Oct 1811). The Lampo family has moved out. Still living with them is Gaetano Monteleone, 53 (b. 1759), and joining them is Anna Felicia, Gaetano's wife, 53 (b. 1759).

Calogero and Giuseppa's daughter, Anna Felicia, is born and baptized 30 January 1814. Her godparents are Giuseppe and Antonina Grizzaffi, a married couple.

Gaetano is born 2 April 1817 and baptized on the fifth. His godparents are Antonino and Isabella Marchese, a married couple.

Francesco Paolo is born and baptized on 12 October 1820. His godparents are Calogero and Agata di Miceli, a married couple.

Franceso Paolo dies on 28 February 1821 at four months of age.

Francesca marries Michaele Sabbatino on 13 April 1823.

Carmela is born and baptized on 6 July 1823. Her godparents are Rosario and Pietra Marino, a married couple. She dies on 27 July 1823 at three weeks of age. The record of her death calls her father "Francesco."

Maria Carmela's baptismal record has not yet been found. She is presumed to have been born after Carmela's death. Maria Carmela survives to marry.

Anna Felicia marries Antonino Milone on 28 April 1833. Calogero and Giuseppa are still living at this time.

On 9 September 1833, a bounty is set for the capture or killing of Giuseppe Castro, called Rapanzino.

In 1834, Calogero and his family return to the strada di Don Vincenzo Catinella. Calogero is 61 (b. 1773), his wife Giuseppa, 49 (b. 1785), children Giovanni, 22 (b. 1812), Giuseppe, 20 (b. 1814), Gaetano, 15 (b. 1819), and Maria Carmela, 10 (b. 1824), and Anna Felicia Monteleone, 74 (b. 1760), Giuseppa's mother, who lived with them in 1812. Her father, Gaetano, who appeared in Calogero's household in 1811 and 1812, may have died by this time.

Note that Calogero's son, Giuseppe, who is wanted by the police by this time, appears in the 1834 census.

Giuseppe is clearly killed, reportedly at age 27 (he is 28) on 8 July 1836.

Giuseppa dies at age 55 (b. 1782) on 10 July 1837, during the summer of the first recorded cholera outbreak in western Europe. Calogero survives her.

Giovanni marries Rosalia la Rosa on 28 May 1843. The record of his marriage does not indicate whether either of his parents has died by this time.

Calogero dies, reportedly at age 86 (he is 69) on 4 March 1845.

Maria Carmela marries Antonino lo Jacono on 4 November 1849.

Francesca dies at age 54 (b. 1805) on 9 September 1859, the widow of Michaele.

Anna Felicia, a widow, dies at age 73 (b. 1814) on 24 April 1887.

Giovanni is married to Rosalia La Rosa. He dies at age 79 on 20 December 1888. Rosalia survives him.

Maria Carmela dies, reportedly at age 73 (she is 74) on 9 May 1898, the widow of Antonio.
