Biography

Private John Hyde served in the United States Civil War.
Mustered out: Apr 1865
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Company E, 4th Regiment, Alabama Infantry

John, son of Charlie Hyde and Lottie Hyde, died (age 68) on 29 December 1911 in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.[1] He was buried in the cemetery at Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa.[1]

He was a Civil War Veteran and pensioner.[2] He served as a private with Company E, 4th Regiment, Alabama Infantry (Conecuh and Covington Counties), but he enlisted in Dale County at the start of the war according to his widow.[2] In 1907 he applied for a Civil War pension from the state of Alabama, since federal pensions were only granted to former Union soldiers.[2][3] In order to be eligible for a pension, the soldier needed to demonstrate that he was either indigent or disabled.[4] The report of a physician was dated 8 July 1907 stating that he had undergone an oral and physical examination.[2] The findings were that John was "very infirm and debilitated also demented at the time, beside himself nervous and excitable unable to work he suffers with his kidneys."[2] The oral examination found that John was wounded at Gaines Farm [Mill] in the upper right leg and received a flesh wound at the second Manassas.[2] The doctor felt he was very deserving of a pension.[2] The application also stated that he owned property and livestock worth about $272.[2] In his wife's pension application, she stated that he was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga.[2]

John Hyde was born in 1843. He died in 1911 and is buried in The Old Cemetery, Bryce Mental Hospital Tuscaloosa Alabama.

He's in Census records 1880, 1900, 1910 Alabama...not sure why he was in mental hospital...but couldn't have been there long before his death
