Biography

Scottish flag
William Wallace was born in Scotland.

William Wallace was born and baptized in the Church of Scotland on 23rd August, 1771 in Riccarton. He was the son of William Wallace and Anne Whyte [1] .

It is likely that William Wallace married Robina Pender before 1802 [2] Their children were -

Ann Wallace (b.1802),
William Wallace (b.1803),
Elizabeth Wallace (b.1811),
James Wallace (b.1815).
Margaret Wallace (deceased by 1856) [3]
Mary Wallace [3]
Jean Wallace [3]

There is a birth record for Ann Wallace b.1802 Old Monkland or Coatbridge [4] which indicates that her parents were William Wallace and Jean Pender [5]. Possibly 'Jean' and 'Robina' were the same person.

By 1841, William was living in Barony, Lanarkshire where he was working as a bleacher in the textile industry [6] and living with his wife Robina (Pender) Wallace, aged 68 and his son William aged 35. James Wallace was also in business with his father William as a bleacher at Burnbank [7][8]and after William’s death in 1856, carried on the business himself. They were involved in the preparation of textiles at Burnbank and their business could be classified as 'Textile and Clothing Manufacturers'. The 'bleacher' occupations of William Wallace and also his son William Wallace are confirmed by the 1841 census for Burnside [6]. Note this census record [9] also includes his son James (bleacher), daughter in law Jane (Campbell) and grandsons William and James (Cathrine was presumably the sister of Jane Wallace. Cathrine is recorded as a 'servant' and 'out of county').

In 1851 William Wallace would have been about 78 years old. The 1851 census for Burnbank House[10] shows William Wallace junior unmarried aged 45 (bleacher) with James Thompson unmarried aged 21 (bleacher). Indeed the will of William Wallace indicates that he had a grandson James Thompson [3].

William Wallace died in 1856 in Glasgow [11] on 28th September, 1856, aged 85. William left a will dated 1856 [3].

William Wallace's will [3] shows daughters Elizabeth (deceased), Margaret (deceased), Ann, Mary and Jean, sons William and James, and three grandchildren A textual translation of William Wallace's will is -

"Robina Pender or Walace spouse
William Wallace son
Jane Campbell daughter-in-law wife of son James
James Wallace son
Robina Thompson grand daughter
James Thompson grand son
Margaret Wallace or Muir daughter (deceased)
Ann Wallace or Rankin daughter
Mary Wallace or Aitken? daughter
Jean Wallace or Caddie daughter
Elizabeth Wallace daughter (deceased) married an Alexander :Ross
Thomas Murray or Ross illegitimate son of Elizabeth"

Research Notes

The 1841 census record for Burnbank [6] also includes two children - Thomas Thompson aged 11 and Robina Thompson aged 7. These were the grandchildren of William Wallace senior. The will of William Wallace shows that he had a grandson James Thompson and a granddaughter Robina Thompson [3].
