Abel Chapman (portrait) was born in 20 Aug 1694 in Whitby, Yorkshire, England. He is the son of Mary Chapman and William Chapman.[1]
Abel married Susannah Lotherington, daughter of John Lotherington and Elizabeth Tiplady, on 25 Jan 1720 in Pickering, Whitby, Yorkshire.[2][3] Susannah was born on 2 Jul 1693 in Whitby, Yorkshire. They had two children: Elizabeth and Mary.
Elizabeth Chapman was born on 24 Mar 1723 in Whitby, Yorkshire, died about 12 Apr 1728 in Whitby, Yorkshire, and was buried on 14 Apr 1728 in FBG Whitby.
Mary Chapman was born on 17 Jun 1724 in Whitby, Yorkshire, died about 24 Oct 1725 in Whitby, Yorkshire, and was buried on 26 Oct 1725 in FBG Whitby.
Abel next married Elizabeth Walker, daughter of John Walker and Esther Stonehouse, on 10 Jan 1727 in FMH Whitby.[4][5] Elizabeth was born on 22 Sep 1701 in Whitby, Yorkshire and died on 8 Nov 1735. They had four children: Esther, Mary, John and William.[6]
Abel next married Hannah Gaskin, daughter of William Gaskin and Hannah Scarth, on 3 Apr 1745[7] in FMH Staintondale, Pickering, Yorkshire.[8] Hannah was born on 27 Jun 1715 in Whitby, Yorkshire and died on 30 Apr 1795. They had four children: Mary, Hannah, Abel and Jane.[9]
Abel Chapman, Master Mariner, died aged 83 on 13 Oct 1777 and buried Whitby, York, England.[10]
The ship Chapman was built as the Sibella, for Abel Chapman.[11] She was launched in Feb 1777, but renamed possibly owing to Abel’s death in October.[12]
