Biography

James was the son of Joseph C. and Sarah (Deaton) Thompson. According to an interview with his daughter Leona, James became a coal miner by the age of 9 years old, as soon as he could read and write. When his wife Mary contracted tuberculosis, they moved to Colorado from Missouri, where he continued working in mines in Louisville, Oak Creek, and Craig, Colorado; and Rains and Helper, Utah. James was a union man, and was arrested in 1914 for going on strike in Routt County. He died in Craig, Colorado, and is buried in Rifle, Colorado in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Research Notes

The main source of information for the birthplaces and birthdates of the Thompson children is a typewritten list from their father, Joseph C. Thompson. The problem is, I can't find all of the place names listed. For example, James is supposed to have been born in "Ardria, Mulinburg, Henderson, Kentucky" I can't find a place name like that, so I'm not 100% certain where he was born.Since the family was living in Paradise, Muhlenberg County in 1870, I'm just going with that for now.

Death date Discrepancies

  1. City cemetery records say that he died on December 2nd, but that was apparently his burial date.
  2. Family records say that he died on November 28, 1944.
  3. His obituary in the Rifle newspaper says that he died on November 29th.
  4. His obituary in the Craig newspaper says that he died on November 30th.
