Early Years

Hon. Charles S. Burpee was born Jun 18, 1817 in Sheffield, New Brunswick[1], the son of Elizabeth (Stickney) Burpee and Jeremiah Burpee.[2] His grandparents were among the founding settlers of Maugerville in Sunbury County, having taken advantage of land offered by Great Britain after the Seven Years War.

He was educated at the Sheffield Grammar School.

Marriages and Children

Charles Burpee married 3 times:

  • Mary (Perley) Burpee on June 9, 1848. She died December 16, 1850.
  • Charlotte Hayward (Perley) Burpee on March 20, 1853. Charlotte was the sister of his first wife Mary. She died June 19, 1861. Charles and Charlotte had two children:
  • Elizabeth A. (Morrow) Burpee on September 4, 1871. She died on Feb 3, 1903.

Public Service and Political Career

He was a Member of Parliament continuously from 1867 to 1887

  • 1867: Sitting as a member of the official opposition.
  • 1872: Sitting as a member of the official opposition until a scandal toppled the MacDonald government. He then sat on the government side under Prime Minister Alexander MacKenzie.
  • 1874: He was elected to the third Canadian parliament as a government member under Prime Minister Alexander MacKenzie.
  • 1878: He was elected to the third Canadian parliament and sat as a member of the official opposition.
  • 1883: He was elected to the third Canadian parliament and sat as a member of the official opposition under Sir Edward Blake.

Mr. Burpee was tapped as a Senator from New Brunswick In Feb 1, 1900 and resigned on July 19 of the same year.

He continued to be active in politics, holding the presidency of his local riding association to the day of his death.

Later Life, Death and Legacy

Besides his public life, Mr. Burpee owned extensive land in Sunbury County and ran a significant farming operation.

Hon. Charles Burpee passed away at Sheffield, New Brunswick on November 29, 1909.[3]

He is buried at the Sheffield United Church Cemetery, Sheffield, New Brunswick.[4]
