  • Frederick Caris, Jr., born 1779 in Pennsylvania, died 08 Nov 1849 in Portage Co., Ohio. He was a son of Frederick Caris, Sr., and Mary Waggoner Caris. He married Rachel Hook, daughter of Matthias Hook and Catherine Henestofiel Hook, probably around 1805. Frederick Jr. and Rachel had 9 children together: Catherine, Joel, Martha, Mary,

  • According to A. G. Caris records, "Frederick and Rachel were parents of 14 children - 9 of whom reached maturity. One was Matthias W. Caris -" (My GG Grandfather, ~Gertrude Caris Palmer)
  • "In 1802 Frederick Caris, originally from Pennsylvania, came into town. Caris purchased Lot No. 43 west of Muddy Pond, and Hartle Lot No. 42 on the opposite side of the Pond. Their descendants continued to reside in that part of the town for many years.
  • In January 1803 came John Caris, son of Frederick, and with him Arthur Anderson both of whom were employed by Mr.Root in clearing the land. In April John Caris, a brother of Frederick, came with his wife and settled at Muddy Lake.   • Frederick and Rachel (Hoke) Caris, both natives of Pennsylvania, were married in that State, and before the war of 1812 they came West and settled on a tract of wild land in Portage county, Ohio. There, in the midst of the forest and surrounded on all sides by the Indians, they improved a farm, spent the rest of their lives and there died. Frederick Caris was a Captain in the war of 1812, and rendered valiant service in that conflict. In their religious views he and his wife were Universalists. They were the parents of fourteen children, nine of whom reached maturity. Four of that number are now living, viz.: Mary Price, of New Albany, Indiana, aged eight-six years; Mathias; Hiram, of Fulton, Ohio, aged seventy, and Rachel Miller, of Coldwater, Michigan, aged sixty-eight.
