The Herald Journal, Greensboro, Georgia, Friday, February 18, 2000 Page 7 Funeral Services Funeral Service held Sunday for Mr. R. Roy Overton, Jr. Redmond Roy Overton, J., 93, of Greensboro died Thursday, February 10, 2000 at Minnie B. Boswell Hospital in Greensboro.
Roy Overton was a "living legend" in Greensboro and was a colorful character. A man with many talents, he was known for his sign painting experience.
During World War II, he served overseas in the Pacific and once was in the movies in Hollywood as a stand-in for James Cagney.
After many years in the U.S. Navy, Roy moved back to Greensboro after World War II where he went to work in Marietta with Lockhead Aeronautical. In the 1960's, he was manager of the City of Greensboro Water and Gas Department. He then went to work with D.O.T. and retired as Superintendent of Maintenance with the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Roy was born in Greene Co. on June 10, 1906, the son of Roy Overton, Sr. and Ruth Pattillo Overton. He was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Sandersville.
He was a member of the San Marino Lodge No. 34 in Greensboro, a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in Yaarab Temple of Atlanta, Fulton Co., Georgia.
Roy Overton was preceded in death by wife, Irene McCook Overton. He is survived by first cousins, M.C. Overton of Dunwoody, Georgia; W.M. Overton of Greensboro, Georgia; Vesta Newton of Greenseboro, Georgia; and Mamie Delle Maxwell of Danville, Georgia.
Graveside services were held Sunday, February 13th at 2 p.m. at the Greensboro City Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Usry Officiating. Interment was in Greensboro City Cemetery.
Gentlemen serving as pallbearers were E.H. Armor, Lewis Duvall, Dr. Fred Hunter, Sr.; Bill Moore, Gary Usry and Carey Williams, Jr.
McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro had charge of the arrangements.
