Jonathan served in the Civil War as a Private, having enlisted in Company K, Ohio 2nd Heavy Artillery Regiment on 4 Jan 1864. Mustered out on 4 Nov 1864 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. He m. 2nd., July 13, 1895, Bucyrus, Crawford Co., Ohio, Samantha Jennie Rife, daughter of Louis and Catherine Rife.
