Biography

Edward was born in 1796.

Edward Barrington built in 1836 Fassaroe House in Kilmacanoge Civil Parish, near Bray, Co. Wicklow - "The Barringtons were friendliness personified in Bray, where they fed the poor during The Famine years and set up a famous hospital to treat fever in Dublin's Liberties. ... the house spans 6,900 sq ft and stands two storeys over basement. There's a separate mews of 4,000 sq ft and private grounds of 4.5ac of woodlands, a tennis court and a walk leading to Enniskerry Village."[1]

DEATH of EDWARD BARRINGTON, Esq -Another worthy citizen of Dublin has been called to his rest. At a green old age, surrounded by his family, calmly passed away Edward Barrington, who for upwards of half a century pursued his quiet and unostentatious career in Dublin as an honest trader and useful citizen. Mr. Barrington's first appearance in public life was in connection with the famine of 1847. With Jonathan Pim, the late Joseph Bewly, the late James Perry, and other members of the Society of Friends, the deceased gentleman was actively engaged, during that year in the distribution of relief in the West. He will, however, be better remembered for the lively interest he took as administrator of his brother John's bequests, in founding the Barrington Lectureships on Political Economy, which, with the able assistance of Dr. Hancock and co-operation of the Council of the Statistical Society, were put by him upon a foundation to be of solid and enduring benefit to his countrymen. He was elected a town councilor in the reformed corporation, but finding that it became like its predecessors, affected with the rage of party politics, did not seek re-election. On the re-organization of the Ballast Board, Mr. Barring- ton was chosen by his fellow-citizens as member of the Port and Docks Board, receiving, we believe, the second highest number of the seven who were elected, and while on that Board gave close atten- tion to the large public interests it became his duty to guard, watching with a vigilant eye the dis- bursemnents of the public moneys.

Mr. Barrington was twice married; by his first wife, the daughter of Mrs. Leadbeater, the authoress of "Cottage Dialogues " and the " Annals of Ballitore," he had eleven children, and by the second wife, who survives him, six.

Mr. Barrington died at his residence, Fossarre, in one of the most beautiful villages in the County of Wicklow, at the advanced age of eighty-one. - Saunders's News Letter. [2][3][4]

The will of Edward Barrington late of Fassaroe County Wicklow Esquire J.P. deceased who died 12 Oct 1877 at same place was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Arthur Barrington Ironfounder of Ringsend, Philip Sydney Barrington Gentleman of Ballyman both in County Dublin and Richard Manliffe Barrington of Fassaroe Esquire Barrister-at-law the Executors.[5]
