Biography

Eugene Hollister Wise was born 07 January 1896 at Alexandria, Rapides Parish, Louisiana. He is the son of Henrie Eliza “Lida” Hollister and John Ziegler Wise.

The 1900 United States Census, enumerated 2 June 1900, records Eugene as Eugene Wise residing in the household of his parents Lida (recorded Lyda) and John Wise in the home they are renting at 2nd Street, Alexandria Township, Rapides Parish (recorded as County), Louisiana. He is four-years-old. Also residing in the household are his sister six year old Arline Wise and his half-sister 11 year old Mabel Connor (recorded Mabel Wise).

His father died in 1901 and his mother married James F. Barrett 09 July 1902 at Buncombe County, North Carolina.

His mother died 25 February 1904. Eugene and his sister went to live with their paternal grandparents in Pennsylvania.

The 1910 United States Census, enumerated 19 & 20 1910, records Eugene as Eugean Wise residing in the household of his grandparents Samuel F. and Nancy Wise in the home they own on Harmon Road in Daughtery Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He is 14 years-old and had been attending school. Also residing in the household are his 16 year old sister Arline (recorded Arlean Wise) and his Aunt Emma Wise.

Eugene registered for the World War I Draft at the Daugherty Precinct in Beaver County, Pennsylvania 05 June 1917.

He married Grace Vearl Marie Swick about 1918. Grace was born 15 October 1897 at Beaver, Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of Samuel Orrin Swick and Eva Frazier.

The 1920 United States Census, Enumerated 20 January 1920, records Eugene as Eugene H. Wise residing in the household of his grandfather Samuel F. Wise on the dairy farm he owns on Grade Road in Daughtery Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Eugene is 24 years old, can read and write and is a laborer on the farm. Also residing in the household is his 23 year old wife, Marie G. Wise, she can read and write and no occupation is entered for her. Samuel is now 88 years old, widowed and still farming.

The 1930 United States Census, Enumerated 23 April 1930, records Eugene as Eugene H. Wise, head of household, residing on the farm he owns in North Sewickley Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He is 34 years old and is not a veteran. He has been married for 12 years to Marie and they have a radio set. Also residing in the household is their two year old son Norman and a lodger, 11 year old George Thompson, he had been attending school.

The 1940 United States Census, Enumerated 22 April 1940, records Eugene as Eugene Wise head of household residing on the farm he owns valued at $3500 (about $67,924.00 on 2021) in North Sewickley Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He is 41 years old and has a fifth grade education. Also residing in the house hold are his wife, Marie, her age is recorded as being 41, she has completed one year of high school and is engaged in the home in housework; and their son 12 year old Norman who has completed the fifth grade. They also have six wards residing in the household 16 year old Lester Mason, 16 year old Patty Eales, 13 year old Myra Eales, 12 year old Ray Koah, 12 year old Robert Caler, and 10 year old James Caler.

Eugene registered for the World War II Draft at the East McKeeseport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania,local board 27 April 1942.

Eugene was 76 years of age when he died in February 1972 at Beaver Falls, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He is buried at Concord Cemetery, North Sewickley, Beaver, Pennsylvania.
