Biography

• 1. He was a lawyer in Washington County, New York before removing to Sandusky, Ohio. He was frequently a member of the Ohio legislature and he was elected to the U.S. Congress 1831-33. He died at Sandusky, Ohio December 27, 1864.^[1]

• 2. Eleutheros Cooke was born in Granville, N.Y., in 1787. The United States Constitution was written during the year he was born, and his name, which most likely was of Greek derivation, was the Cooke's way of honoring that event. Eleutheros grew to manhood in Granville, and while still living in New York state, Eleutheros studied to became a lawyer. He married Martha Carswell in 1812, and in 1819 he moved his family to Bloomingville, Oxford Township, Ohio. By 1821 he moved his family to Sandusky, Ohio, where he prospered in land and legal dealings. In the 1820s he served in the Ohio Legislature, and in 1830 he was elected the the US Legislature from the 14th District which then covered several north central counties. He served only one term, losing in the following election.^[2]
