Biography

William Adams was born in about 1770 in the Colony of Virginia.^[1]

He is identified by many researchers as the William Adams who was living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, by 15 August 1795, when a marriage bond was issued there for the marriage of William Adams to Fanny Meachum.^[2]

By 1850, he was living in Floyd County, Kentucky. Also in the household with him is his wife Fanny Adams, born in Virginia in about 1780.^[1]

Research Notes

Conflicting Marriage Dates

The Pittsylvania County Marriage Bond Book contains two conflicting ledger entries recording the marriage bond for William Adams and Fanny Meachum/Mitchum. One, cited in the bio above, records the date of 15 August 1795. The other is dated 15 August 1790.^[3] Thus, it is uncertain which date is correct, but a marriage in 1795 is more consistent with their estimated birth years of 1770 (William) and 1780 (Fanny) based on the 1850 census.

At least one William Adams appears as the head of household in Floyd County from 1810-1840. Need to review these families carefully to determine if it is the same William Adams, born about 1770, who appears in 1850, as the ages given for the household members do not all appear to be consistent:
