Frances was the daughter of Asher (or Ashur) Adams and Amelia Wyllys. She had a difficult childhood, being moved from one relative to another until she settled with her uncle Rev. George Eliashib Adams in Brunswick, Maine.
Fanny was the wife of Civil War Brigadier General Joshua Chamberlain, who later was the Governor of Maine.
She had four children, two of whom died in infancy.
Grace Dupee Chamberlain Allen (1856 - 1937); Harold Wyllys Chamberlain (1858 - 1928); Emily Chamberlain (1860 - 1860); Gertrude Loraine Chamberlain (1865 - 1865).
Fanny died shortly after falling and breaking her hip in 1905. She is buried beside her husband at Pine Grove Cemetery in Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine.
