Biography

Parker Harris Agnew was born in Agnew's Mills, Richland Township, Pennsylvania in 1848. He was the youngest child of James Finley Agnew and Susan Nesbitt McKee.

Parker's father, James Finley Agnew, was relatively prosperous and owned a "country store" (probably dry goods) and a wool factory. He also ran a postoffice.[1] When Parker was a boy and young man, he worked on his father's farm,[2] and most likely worked at his father's store and factory, too. Parker was probably educated locally at "the old log schoolhouse," which is referenced in a newspaper article about Parker's brother, James McKee Agnew.[3]

In the 1850 Census, Parker and most of his siblings are shown residing at a neighboring farm.[4] The reason for the separation from their parents and two older brothers is unknown, but perhaps it was due to an illness in their home.

In the 1860s, Parker married Arabella Ritchey, the daughter of James Alexander Ritchey, Jr. and Mary Ann Cripps. The date for this marriage is cited on the marriage application for his second marriage as 22 Jul 1862. This is not likely to be correct, because Parker would have only been 14 years old in 1862. I think it probable that Parker and Arabella married in 1868, a year before the birth of their first child in 1869. Parker and Arabella had five children:

  • Carrie Blanche Agnew (1869-1939), unmarried;
  • Gertrude Anna Agnew (1870-1969), m. Joseph Steele Young;
  • Elizabeth Brown Agnew (1872-1972), unmarried;
  • Samuel James Agnew (1874-1924), m. Lulu M. Kinsey; and
  • Parker Hayes Agnew (1877-1968), m. Mabel Allie Reese.

In 1888, Arabella died at only 43 years of age. In 1890, Parker married Emma Beals, the daughter of William and Susan Beals. To my knowledge, they had no children.

Parker was a farmer for most of his life. Such is his occupation cited in the 1860, 1880, and 1920 Census. Inexplicably, for a brief time as shown in the 1900 Census, Parker and Emma lived in Hickory Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania where Parker was working as a Teamster.

Parker died in Richland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania in 1930. Like most of his family, he is buried in Richland Presbyterian Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.

1850 - Census, 2 years old. Parker and most of his siblings are recorded living in the household of James Lavere. I have, so far, found no blood relationship with James Lavere. In the 1850 Census, only two of Parkerl's siblings were recorded in the household of their parents, James McKee Agnew and T. Washington Agnew. Could their parents and 2 brothers have been quarantined due to an illness in their parents household? The Lavere household in 1850 contained James Lavere (54), Nancy Lavere (48), Jackson Lavere (20), John Agnew (15), William D Agnew (12), Samuel P Agnew (10, Ann M Agnew (7), Clinton Agnew (4), and Parker Agnew (2).
