James Talbot Airey KCB was born in Sicily on 6 Sep 1812[1], son of Lt Gen Sir George Airey KCH KCB (1761 - 1833) and Catherine (Talbot) Airey (1774 - 1852).[2]
His siblings were:
James served in Afghanistan (1841-1842); in the Gwalior campaign at Punniar, India, in 1843; in Crimea as Assistant Quartermaster-General of the Light Division at Alma, Balaclava and Inkerman; and as Quartermaster-General at Kertch in 1855 under Lieutenant-General Sir George Brown[3]; and at the Siege of Sebastopol where he was awarded Knight Legion Honour of the Order of Medjidie. He served with the Coldstream Guards where commanded a brigade at Malta (1875-1878); and served Colonel of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers from 1886. John retired in 1881.[2]
John Airey never married.[4] In 1890 he was said to be living at 6 Albert Mansions in Kensington, London. He was a member of the United Service and Marlborough Clubs at this time.[2]
James died on 1 Jan 1898[1] in London, England, United Kingdom aged 85.[5] Probate to his estate was granted on 1 January 1898 to Henry Geers Cotterell and Cecil Dickinson.[6]
