William Alben (1802-1878) was the son of John Alben & his wife Ellen Dixon. He was born 4 Oct 1802 in Pitt Street, Liverpool and christened at Our Lady & St Nicholas, Liverpool on 17 Oct 1802 [1].
On 11 Aug 1823, William, a whitesmith, married at Our Lady & St Nicholas, Liverpool to Elizabeth Cain [2].
William & Elizabeth started married life on (Upper) Frederick Street, Liverpool where they are shown as living when their first 3 children are christened then sometime in the 1830s they moved slightly nearer to the docks to Watkinson Street, Liverpool where they added several more children. The 1841 census shows them on Watkinson Street and William still a whitesmith [3].
After 1841 census, they lose the baby Caleb, a couple more sons are born (both Williams) but the earlier-born one died after only living for an hour.
The family move back to (Upper) Frederick Street where in 1849, William's wife Elizabeth died aged 45 years. She is buried at the Wesleyan Chapel on Stanhope Street, Toxteth Park [4] joining 3 of her infant children who pre-deceased her.
1851 shows William now a herbalist, living with 3 of his younger surviving children on Park Street, Toxteth Park. His son John, now himself married with wife and daughter are also living at the property [5].
Another decade passes and William, now working as a porter, living with his daughters Alice & Elizabeth (Frances), now married , and her son Thomas [6].
Another 10 years on and now back at (Upper) Frederick Street, William is not employed and is still living with his daughter Elizabeth & her son Thomas. She however has remarried in the interim to Mark Shannon [7].
In Feb 1878, William died at Upper Frederick Street & is buried at St James' Cemetery in Liverpool [8].
