Corporal Payton Smith Anderson was born about 1825 in Alabama. Payton Smith Alexander was first enrolled in the military on 23 May 1846 at Commerceville, Giles County, TN.
In the 1860 census Payton (age 34), Farmer, was in District 5, Obion, Tennessee.[1]

He was later enrolled as a Union soldier on 9 December 1863 into D Company, 14th Regiment (Bradford's Regiment) of Tennessee Cavalry in Union City Tennessee for a term of three years. He was mustered into service as a Corporal on 20 January 1864 at Columbus, KY.
He was captured at Ft Pillow and sent to Andersonville Prison, where he died of disease in 1864. He was buried at the Andersonville National Cemetery.[2] [3] Death:
