Biography

BSA Police Crest

Birth & Upbringing: Walter was born in 1889 in the Fulham District of London. [1]. Note his name is recorded as Allum. He was the son of Frederick and Harriet (nee Holland) Allam of 41, Glenthorne Road, Hammersmith, Fulham, London & Middlesex, England [2]
Migrations: Walter migrated to southern Africa in 1911, shortly before he attested into the BSA Police. [3] This time he is recorded as Allan.
Occupation: House Painter; [4] Policeman/Soldier - Joined the BSA Police in July 1911; Reg. No. 1474; served until June 1917. Walter Allam was a volunteer regular member of the force which was established by the BSAP for deployment to the north eastern border of Northern Rhodesia. This became known as Murray's Column, which comprised two infantry companies. The Column was to become the force which fought against the Germans in Tanganyika mostly along its frontier with Nyasaland and eventually in Tanganyika itself. It is evident that Walter was seconded to the 1st Battalion Rhodesia Regiment from 22 December 1914 (No. 633).

Rhodesia Regiment Badge

Military Service: The BSA Police was very much a para-military service and was the nation's first line of defense. The force, at the time of World War I was the only regular force and the new country's first line of defense. The BSA Police participates in two campaigns against the Germans in the 1914-18 war, in the Caprivi Strip and in German East Africa. It would appear that Walter transferred to the Rhodesia Regiment while on active service.
