Biography

Henry Allen was born in about 1835 at Charlbury in Oxfordshire, the son of William Smith Allen and his wife Jane, born Jane Baughan ^{[1] [2] [3]}.

In 1851 Henry was living at Charlbury with his parents William S. and Jane and his younger sister Louisa. His age was given as 15, implying a birth date in 1835 or 1836. His birthplace was given as Charlbury, Oxfordshire. He was a draper. (His father was described as a tailor and draper) ^[1].

Henry Allen, aged 26, a draper, of Charlbury, son of William Smith Allen, draper; and Charlotte Elizabeth Harris, aged 20, of Charlbury, daughter of Joshua Harris, deceased, grocer; were married at the parish church of Charlbury on 20 March 1861 ^{[2] [4]}.

Later (not much later) in 1861 Henry Allen was living in Church Street in Charlbury with his wife Charlotte E. [They probably lived at the bottom of the hill near the corner where Park Street joins.] His age was given as 25, implying a birth date in 1835 or 1836. His birthplace was given as Charlbury, Oxfordshire. He was a draper and grocer, employing 2 boys ^[3].

In 1871 the widowed Henry was still living in Church Street (presumably in the same house/shop) with his widowed mother-in-law Charlotte Harris. His age was given as 35, implying a birth date in 1835 or 1836. His birthplace was given as Charlbury, Oxfordshire. He was a draper [2 female assistants were living in the household] ^[5].

He was the subject of an exhibition at Charlbury Museum in 2017 ^[6].
