Ruth Elizabeth South, 95, of 617 Guilford Avenue, Hagerstown, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown. 1
Born Friday, Sept. 19, 1913, in Pondsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Ragan Alsip and the late Nora Emily Bidle Alsip Shingleton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence A. South Jr. 1
Ruth was a Christian. Ruth was employed by the City of Hagerstown for 20 years, having worked in the Purchasing Department for more than 13 years, then transferred to the Fire Department for seven years, retiring in September 1975. She was a member of Boonsboro First Christian Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. She was a former member of the First Christian Church in Hagerstown, where she taught Intermediate Sunday School and was also involved as Leader of the Chi Rho Youth, and Junior Church. She was also one of the first women deaconesses elected there. 1
She was active in many church and city affairs and was inducted into the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame on Oct. 28, 2008. Ruth was a faithful member and President of the Manor Church Senior Citizens Club. 1 is survived by her son, Clarence A. ?Jack? South III and wife, Lois, of Hagerstown; one grandson, Clarence A.?Andy? South IV and wife, Jamie, of Hagerstown; great-grandchildren, Paige, Riley and Ethan; one brother, Lawrence N. Alsip of Boonsboro; three step-grandchildren, Sherri Schindle of Williamsport, Chuck Hawbaker of Williamsport, and Karen Sease of Hagerstown; four stepgreat-grandchildren, and one stepgreat-great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews; and a caring and loving friend, Harold Ridenour Sr. of Smithsburg. 1
Services will be held Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. from the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Dean M. Miller and the Rev. Reese Davis officiating. 1
Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19. 1
Interment will be in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown. 1
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Boonsboro First Christian Church, 14 Saint Paul Street, Boonsboro, MD 21713. 1
