Biography

Harrison Mattoon Alvord, born 4 Jan 1840 at Easthampton, Massachusetts, was the second child of Joseph Field Alvord and Mariette Clapp.

He married first, 6 Nov 1867 at Mansfield, Ohio, Mary Josephine Beach [b. 11 Jun 1838 @ Middletown, Connecticut, daughter of John J. and Phoeba (Riley) Beach; d. 20 Aug 1868, Bement, Illinois]. They had one child:

  1. Mary Frances Alvord (19 Aug 1868 - 7 Sep 1868)

After the death of his first wife (probably as complications from childbirth), Harrison M. Alvord married second, 27 Sep 1871 at Derby, Connecticut, Frances Walters Beach [b. 15 Dec 1845 @ Birmingham, Connecticut, daughter of Benjamin and Betsey (Hord) Beach]. They had 3 children:

  1. Joseph Grant Alvord, b. 31 Oct 1872; served in Spanish-American War
  2. Bessie Marietta Alvord (29 Sep 1879 - 21 Dec 1885)
  3. Myrtle Frances Alvord, b. 18 Jul 1895

As described in the Alvord genealogy, Harrison Mattoon Alvord served in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. D, 73rd Regiment, Ill. Volunteers, July 24, 1862 ; was promoted to Sergeant Aug. 21, 1862 ; First Sergeant Dec. 22, 1862; commissioned 1st Lieutenant Apr. 11, 1865. His regiment was organized at Camp Butler, Ill, and mustered in Aug. 21, 1862; ordered to Louisville, Ky., and participated in the following brattles: Pursuit of Bragg's army to Crab Orchard, Oct. 7-15; Perryville, Oct. 8,... Stone River, Dec. 28-31, 1862; Chickamauga, Sept. 19-20; Mission Ridge, Nov. 25, 1863 ; Buzzard's Roost Gap, May 8 ; Rocky Faced Ridge, May 9-11; Resaca, May 13-15; Adairville, May 17-18; Kingston, May 19 ; Battle about Dallas, May 20 ; Pumpkin Vine Creek, May 22 ; Altoona Hill, May 25-June 1 ; Kenesaw Mountain, June 27 ; Peach Tree Creek, July 19-20; Atlanta and Jonesboro, Aug. 31-Sept. 1 ; Lovejoy Station, Sept. 2-6 ; Spring Hill, Nov. 29 ; Franklin, Nov. 30; Nashville, Dec. 15-16, 1864. He was mustered out June 12, 1865. The last point is confirmed by his U.S.V.A. index card [1].

Mr. Alvord is now [1908] agent of the U. S. Express Co. at Mansfield, O., and has held this position for many years. He is a Republican in politics ; weighs 270 lbs. and every pound is made up of brain and muscle. "Most people make room for him when they see him coming.

Harrison M. Alvord died 26 Oct 1924 at Mansfield, Ohio [2]. His grave is in Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio, USA [3].
