His family immigrated to Utah, United States in about 1857, settling in Ephraim, Utah. He fled to Missouri, following his parents, in 1866 due to disagreements with the Mormon church over polygamy. His first chid died during the trip. After this, the Missouri family started to use Byergo as their last name instead of Bierregaard.
Niels passed away at an age of 70 on November 23, 1912 in Guilford, Missouri. He is buried in the Barnard American Legion Cemetery in Barnard, Missouri.[2]
