Biography

William was a prominent businessman in the town of Petersburg, Pennsylvania. He opened a car dealership, service garage, and gas station in 1914, and remained active in that business until his death in 1947.

He was quite tall: his World War 1 Draft Registration Form lists him as being 6' 4" and having a "stout" build. [1]

William Edward Anderson of Petersburg, one of Huntingdon County's pioneer garagemen, passed away in the J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital at Huntingdon at 2:45 o'clock Sunday morning, October 19, 1947. He had been a patient in the hospital for five days and death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage. He had been the owner and proprietor of the Petersburg Garage since 1914. He moved to Petersburg at the age of 7 and except for two years spent at Downinkton, he lived the remainder of his life in Petersburg where he was active in all community affairs. The deceased was born in Neffs Mill, Huntingdon County, on April 6, 1873 a son of Crawford and Sarah (Dauherty) Anderson, both deceased. On April 30, 1902 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Withington who preceded him in death on September 29, 1940. He is survived by two daughters and three sons: Mrs. Lynn Mitchell of McAlevys Fort, Mrs. William W. Nace of Oakland, Md., Philip Anderson of Rahway, N.J., Edward Anderson of Altoona, and Thomas Anderson of Petersburg. Eight grandchildren, one brother, Jesse Anderson of New Castle and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Castner of Monongahela, also survive. Mr. Anderson was a member of the Petersburg Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at the late home on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Petersburg. Friends may call at the home at noon on Tuesday.
