Per Anderson Lysne was born December 9, 1880 at the Ljøsne farm in Lærdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.[1]
His father, Anders Olsen, taught him the art of rosemåling, which later became Per's successful business.
His father's artistic abilities were recognized at the Paris Exposition in 1893.[2][3]
He married Ingeborg Nundal in 1906. Together they migrated to Stoughton, Wisconsin, United States, arriving in New York on August 30, 1907. Ingeborg had been born at Aardal, Sogn, Norway[4][5][1]
Per declared his intention to be a citizen of the United States on October 13, 1908 when he was residing at 405 East Street, Stoughton, Wisconsin indicating the occupation of a "farm laborer. He described himself as fair complexion, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 150 pounds with browny hair and gray eyes. He had emigrated to the United States from Bergen, Norway on the vessel Baltic.[4]
In the 1940 United States Census taken at Stoughton, Wisconsin, he states his work as a "decorator."[6]He is known as the Norwegian-American artist most associated with bringing the traditional Norwegian folk art of Rosemåling to the United States.[1]His specialty was redecorating antique chests and painting on large platters; developing a thriving rosemaling enterprise and passed on his knowledge and artistic abilities to a few people, one of them being his daughter-in-law, Louise Lysne who recalled that Per taught her by holding her hand in his and guiding it through the strokes.[2][7][8]Per also decorated home interiors in southeastern Wisconsin;[1]one being the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bjarne Romnes and their two sons located in Nakoma, Wisconsin. Per painted throughout the home, with one of his works being a prayer for the household which reads in Norwegian, "Naar vi gaar lnd, naar vi gaar ud, tenk pas es, O milde Gud" and translates as "When we go in, when we go out, think of us, O kind God."[9][10]Per A. Lysne also painted Rosemaling designs in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Nerdrum as well as the Genesee Depot home of Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne.[11]
After Ingeborg's death, Per married Olga Ethun in 1945.[1]
In 1947 Per Lysne died at the hospital in Stoughton, Wisconsin following a heart attack.[1][3]
