Biography

Ellen Anglem was born in 1829, the firstborn child of Captain William Anglem and Te Anau. She married Captain Paddy Gilroy in or after November 1847[1] and had been to Sydney several times in his vessels.[2] Being the eldest in the family she and Paddy brought up some of her relatives, including hwe brother William after their father died in 1846.[3]

Ellen Gilroy passed away on Wednesday, 15 December 1926.[4] She was recalled as having an excellent memory, "exceptional ability", clear mind, and a "great gift of description", with the composer of her obituary noting it to be a great loss that her reminiscences of old whaling days had never been collected.[2] She was buried on Friday, 17 December at plot 2 / 6, General, in Bluff Cemetery.[5]
