John Appleton was born on 2 Feb 1814
[1]
in Lancashire - most likely either in the vicinity of St Helens, or in Manchester. He was presumably the son of Henry and Jane Appleton, in whose household his eldest daughter was to be found in the 1841 census.
John married Mary Ann Ridgway on 16 Jan 1837 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire, by licence. Neither had been married before; John was a wireworker of St Helens in the parish of Prescot aged 23 or more, Mary Ann was of the parish of Warrington and aged 18 or more. The witnesses were James Latham and Ellen Whitaker. Since Mary Ann was a minor, John also attested that her father John Ridgway gave his consent to the marriage.

[7]
In 1850, they were living in Dover, Racine, Wisconsin. In the adjacent household was Alice (Appleton) White and family; she was probably John's sister.
[8]
Their twins George Frederick and Sarah Ann were born in 1852, and died in 1852.
[1]
Their daughter Sarah Ann was born on 7 Jun 1855 in Dover, Racine, Wisconsin.
John died on 30 Jan 1866, and was probably buried in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom. The family haven't been able to locate a death certificate or burial records for him, but no records of burials in the cemetery in 1865-6 are available.
